The world’s leading cloud computing provider has chosen Victoria as its home to develop an Asia Pacific cloud infrastructure region, in a move that will further strengthen our thriving tech sector.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) will establish its Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region which will consist of three Availability Zones, each containing one or more discrete data centres, when it launches.
It will complement the company’s existing 25 Availability Zones in eight AWS Regions across Asia Pacific – in Australia, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Japan, Korea, and Singapore.
Through this investment, AWS will create up to 90 jobs within four years of its launch, drawing on Melbourne’s highly skilled talent, a culture of innovation and strong capabilities in areas such as cloud computing.
The AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region will also provide Victorian organisations, including the public sector, access to additional infrastructure to develop advanced technologies like machine learning, internet of things and mobile services.
Commenting on the investment, AWS Senior Vice President of Global Infrastructure and Customer Support Peter DeSantis, said that ‘the announcement of a second AWS Region in Australia demonstrates our ongoing investment in local infrastructure to drive rapid customer innovation and support local economic growth through the vibrant community of AWS partners’.
A subsidiary of Amazon, Amazon Web Services provides on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals, companies, and governments, on a metered pay-as-you-go basis.
Due to open in the second half of 2022, the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) will be a valued addition to Victoria’s tech sector which contributes $38.4 billion to the State’s economy and supports more than 139,000 workers across 19,941 businesses.
